Alabama and Doug Jones: Segregation Then, Elevation Tomorrow?

Miracle GirlAlabama and Doug Jones: Segregation Then, Elevation Tomorrow?

Will the (old) South rise again? Or will it finally be laid in the same mouldering grave as segregation?
And will the crimson tide of Alabama voters shift toward the future or turn back to yesterday? We will know presently.

Roy Moore and My Molestations: When Political News is a Painful Trigger

Miracle GirlRoy Moore and My Molestations: When Political News is a Painful Trigger

Many Alabama Republicans excuse Roy Moore's assaults. Will child molestation soon join the list of inexcusable behaviors normalized in the Trump era?
And what message would a Roy Moore victory send to victims of child sex abuse?

How Trump May Hand the Midterm Election to the Democrats

Miracle Girl: How Trump May Hand the Midterm Election to the Democrats

The Democrats have a chance to take back congress in the 2018 midterm election...if liberals don't form a circular firing squad. If we want to regain congressional power we should leave purity culture to the Religious Right.

Man the Lifeboats--It's Every Republican for Themselves!

Miracle Girl: Man the Lifeboats--It's Every Republican for Themselves!

It would be amusing if the fate of our country--and perhaps our democracy--weren't at stake. I've read many articles in the last few days about Republicans trying to build themselves life rafts before the November elections.

You know things are bad when your own running mate is distancing himself from you.

They Made Their Bed but Let Them Regret It

Miracle Girl: They Made Their Bed but Let Them Regret It

I meant to say this in Sympathy for the Devil, er, Republicans, but forgot to add these sentiments by the time I finished breakfast. But the comments that poured in reminded me that I needed to point out that the Republicans did bring the current state of their party on themselves.

Still, that doesn't change my feelings of sympathy for some now breaking ties to the party that they love. And it doesn't negate the necessity of having a healthy opposition party.

Not that they've been a healthy opposition.

Sympathy for the Devil, er, Republicans

Miracle Girl: Sympathy for the Devil, er, Republicans

I’d like to gloat, but I’m not only feeling sad for the formerly Grand Old Party. In the process, of razing the Republican Party, Donald Trump is degrading the country and our political process as a whole.
But judging from most of my comments, few Democrats are joining me in this sympathy.

Erasing the Cartoon While Facing Another

Miracle Girl: Erasing the Cartoon While Facing Another

I surprise even myself at the depth of my anger and disgust at Donald Trump. Erasing the Cartoon While Facing Another flowed trippingly from my fingertips. The ones Trump might have made fun of when I had limited mobility as I recovered from my coma and strokes.

I wish I could say God help us if for some reason the American people lose their minds and decide to hand over the nuclear launch codes to the most dangerous presidential candidate ever.

EVER.

Benedict Arnold 2.0

Miracle Girl: Benedict Arnold 2.0

I'm still incredulous that Donald Trump would actually beg Vladimir Putin to conduct cyberwarfare against a former Secretary of State. And more than that, I'm angry, not just as a Democrat, but as an American.

Yes, Hillary Clinton is his opponent. But I can't believe the supposedly hyper-patriotic Republicans can get behind this near-treasonous behavior.

Is this really the person they want with his finger on the nuclear trigger? Does he want to hand that to Vlad the Terrible, too?

Wounds to the Body Politic

Miracle Girl: Wounds to the Body Politic

As ugly as the coming presidential campaign is looking to be, I think that both parties are being handed an opportunity.

For the Democrats, they may well gain not only the presidency, but the Senate, as well. There's even an outside chance that they could flip the House.

For the Republicans, the likely electoral debacle may give them a chance to clear themselves of the decades of zealotry and hate mongering to reform themselves into a more rational party capable of winning elections in the future.

Humpty Trumpty

Miracle Girl: Humpty Trumpty

It must be a heartbreaking time for mainstream Republicans. I'm seeing teeth gnashing portents of doom wherever I go on the internet and in the news.

On the one hand, I'm happy that it looks like campaign of the most dangerous candidate in living memory is imploding even before the GOP convention. But, if the Republican Party shatters after the November election, where will our democracy go from there?

Don't Panic (about Trump)

Miracle Girl: Don't Panic (about Trump)

It's scary to see the underbelly of hate that was lying dormant before Trump began stirring it up. But there's a greater population that the Donald is stirring up. And unless the Republican Party changes course, the growing Hispanic population added to the changing beliefs of society will doom the GOP the way Prop 187 did in California.

The Donald Made Them Do It

The Secular Spectrum: The Donald Made Them Do It

We've been watching the Republican primary debates. Or, should I say, we were watching the debates, since it looks like Trump will nix any more.

The last one, alas, featured no references to genitalia. And speaking of dicks, it appears that the Republican establishment won't be able to stop the hate-spewing vulgarian that is Donald Trump after Tuesday's sweeping primary victories.

But what could've laid the groundwork for the so-called party of Lincoln to go down this ugly path. Could it have been the race-baiting rhetoric of the party for the last fifty years?

Coma Girl

Coma Girl

Not a miracle recovery, but a miracle of modern medicine

In 2013 I fell into a six-week coma and nearly died after I contracted legionella. The Legionnaire's disease was in turn triggered by immunosuppression caused by the prednisone I was taking for my rare autoimmune disease, dermatomyositis.

I suffered a series of strokes on both sides of my brain when the sepsis caused my blood pressure to plummet. I fell into a deep coma. My kidneys and lungs began to fail, as my body was began dying one organ at a time. My doctors told my loved ones to give up hope for my full recovery. They expected me to die, and even if I somehow lived, I would remain a vegetable or at best left so hopelessly brain-damaged that I would never be same. But unbeknownst to them, while they were shining lights in my eyes and shaking their heads, I was telling them in my coma-dream--my secular version of a near-death experience--to leave me alone because I was trying to get back to sleep. I was experiencing what is known as covert cognition, the subject of my Skeptical Inquirer article "Covert Cognition: My So-Called Near-Death Experience," which appeared in their July/August issue.

But it wasn't a miracle--despite what so many continue to believe--that I recovered so fully. I owe my life not to God, but the miracles of modern medicine, as well as the nature of the watershed-area brain damage I suffered, as I detailed in my article and in this blog.
