Year of Dead Celebrities: Will the New Year Be Bad for Your Health Too?

Miracle GirlYear of Dead Celebrities: Will the New Year Be Bad for Your Health Too?

2016 has been a bad year for celebrity deaths. But 2017 may be even worse for 'ordinary people.' The repeal of Obamacare will kill thousands more than the celebrities who died in 2016.

Seeking a New Year's Evolution

Miracle Girl: Seeking a New Year's Evolution

Will humanity ever evolve away the need to believe in an all-powerful god? Well, I believe religion isn't hard-wired in the human brain. That's a hopeful sign for the future.

Myth-Taken by Santa

Miracle Girl: Myth-Taken by Santa

"Santa is a fake! And all those Santas, in all those malls, they’re all fake too!" I was only 4, but a little skeptic in the making. Does the Santa myth remind you of something else?

All Aboard the Good Ship Nonreligious!

Miracle Girl: All Aboard the Good Ship Nonreligious!

Instead of nailing up a Keep Out sign, Patheos Nonreligious is putting out the boarding platform. Nones of all stripes will be needed if atheists hope to fight Republican attempts to breach the wall of separation between Church and State.

Trumpcare Should Be Called Trumpscare

Miracle Girl: Trumpcare Should Be Called Trumpscare

The Trump administration and the Republican congressional majority will throw the health of millions under their ideological bus. For millions of Americans, Trumpcare will mean no care.

I should know.

Non-Abrahamic Atheism: A Match Made in Heathen

Atheism exists everywhere there is theism. For every superstition, there are people who say, “Are you kidding me?” And for non-Abrahamic atheists, theirs is a match not made in Heaven.

The Patheos School of Christian Perversity

Miracle GirlThe Patheos School of Christian Perversity

My eyes have been opened to what it's like to grow up Christian from my fellow Patheos Atheist bloggers. I guess you can say that I've been attending the Patheos Atheist school for Christian Indoctrination Studies.

Under the Evil Eye

Miracle Girl: Under the Evil Eye

The "unlucky" unconsciously feel that they're under the Evil Eye. Even skeptics. Yet,
I wasn't unlucky before my strokes and coma, and I'm not lucky now. The Evil Eye was nothing more than a personification of random chance.

Thankful for What?

Miracle Girl: Thankful for What?

We can be thankful that we have the strength within ourselves to take on whatever life decides to throw at us. If I was able to relearn how to walk, you will find the strength to face your family on Thanksgiving...and fight the destructive actions of President Trump.

Scrooge McDonald’s Ghost of Health Insurance Past

Miracle Girl: Scrooge McDonald’s Ghost of Health Insurance Past

Trump wants to sound like the hero, saving people with pre-existing conditions. But that is yet another lie. People with health conditions will soon find they're the goose being cooked by Scrooge McDonald.

The Breitbartization of the White House

Miracle Girl: The Breitbartization of the White House

I was worried what the election of Donald Trump would mean for those labeled "The Other," but I never realized that I might be one of them. To Stephen Bannon, I'm The Other too.

Taking It to the Streets

Miracle Girl: Taking It to the Streets

We the people have the power to resist an authoritarian without subverting the system that elected him. Instead of subverting our system, we should use our democratic rights to resist an authoritarian.

Miracle Girl: Still Stronger Together

It’s going to be a painfully dispiriting four-year journey in the wilderness. But we can bring light to the path because hope will always trump hate.

Comey Over to My Election

Miracle Girl: Comey Over to My Election

Comey has succumbed to the blindness of those who consider themselves to be upright and morally superior. Sound familiar? Though Comey's unconscious bias may well be at work, I think the real culprit is a syndrome that will be all too familiar to atheists.

Geraldine Ferraro paved the way and Bill Clinton predicted it. We're well on track for the first female president to be elected on the heels of the first African-American one.

Think Sunday’s debate was tawdry? You should hear Trump's original plan.
The decimation of the GOP edifice is already underway, destroyed by a builder named Trump.

The Final Nail…Finally

Miracle Girl: The Final Nail…Finally

October 7 will go down in history as the day Hillary Clinton clinched the presidency. Though Donald

Vice Presidential Debate: Drinking Game Edition

Miracle GirlVice Presidential Debate: Drinking Game Edition

Every time Mike Pence "interprets" one of his running mate's comments or policies in a way that is actually the exact opposite, take a slug. You'll be sloshed by the halfway point.

But save some of that booze for after the election. You'll need it if the Trump/Pence campaign wins.

Miracle Girl: Pride Goeth Before the Fall…Election

Hubris, thy name is Donald Trump.
Though it takes balls to put yourself forward for the leader of the free world, Donald Trump cranks the ego level up to 11.

I was right that the pundits would pile on after the debate. But I was wrong about which candidate would be under the stack.

I say, pile on to your hearts content. I’ll bring the popcorn.

The Pixel is Mightier Than the Debate

The press reaction will create the reality for tonight's debate for years to come.  My prediction: If Trump doesn't piss himself, he'll be declared the winner of tonight's debate.

Hitchhiking Savior’s Guide to Redeeming the Galaxy

Did Jesus have to boldly go where no redeemer had gone before, dying over and over again to save the souls of exterrestrials? And did he skip Vogshpere to spare himself from being Vogon poetried to death?

These would once have been considered serious theological questions.

Coma Girl

Coma Girl

Not a miracle recovery, but a miracle of modern medicine

In 2013 I fell into a six-week coma and nearly died after I contracted legionella. The Legionnaire's disease was in turn triggered by immunosuppression caused by the prednisone I was taking for my rare autoimmune disease, dermatomyositis.

I suffered a series of strokes on both sides of my brain when the sepsis caused my blood pressure to plummet. I fell into a deep coma. My kidneys and lungs began to fail, as my body was began dying one organ at a time. My doctors told my loved ones to give up hope for my full recovery. They expected me to die, and even if I somehow lived, I would remain a vegetable or at best left so hopelessly brain-damaged that I would never be same. But unbeknownst to them, while they were shining lights in my eyes and shaking their heads, I was telling them in my coma-dream--my secular version of a near-death experience--to leave me alone because I was trying to get back to sleep. I was experiencing what is known as covert cognition, the subject of my Skeptical Inquirer article "Covert Cognition: My So-Called Near-Death Experience," which appeared in their July/August issue.

But it wasn't a miracle--despite what so many continue to believe--that I recovered so fully. I owe my life not to God, but the miracles of modern medicine, as well as the nature of the watershed-area brain damage I suffered, as I detailed in my article and in this blog.
