Hyperactive-in-Chief: This is the Presidency on ADHD

Miracle GirlHyperactive-in-Chief: This is the Presidency on ADHD

Donald Trump displays the symptoms of ADHD. I should know, because I have it too. But maybe we should be glad that he can't get his act together. I know how crippling ADHD can be.
Fortunately, Donald Trump's case is severe.

Denied Access: Medicaid and Pre-Existing Conditions Under Trumpcare

Miracle Girl: Denied Access: Medicaid and Pre-Existing Conditions Under Trumpcare

Repeal and replace…with nothing. That's what the CBO estimate of the AHCA -- AKA Trumpcare -- boils down to if you have a pre-existing condition and gained coverage through the Medicaid expansion or ACA marketplaces. Just ask the CBO.
Trumpcare means no care at all.

Trans Discrimination: From Lunch Counters to Refused Hot Wings

Miracle GirlTrans Discrimination: From Lunch Counters to Refused Hot Wings

"I’m not gonna serve that! I don’t even know what to call it! It ain’t a boy or a girl. It’s a thing and it ain’t of God."
That's what a zealotous waitress said at a Buffalo Wild Wings to her manager as she was refusing to serve a teenage trans boy out on a back-to-school shopping and bonding trip with his dad.
For this less-than-angelic evangelical, "Thou shalt not serve hot wings to trans youth" is the 11th commandment.

Miracle GirlLocked-in Syndrome: Recovering Against All Odds, Without God’s Help

Kate Allatt unlocked her locked-in state against all odds. My coma recovery was nearly as unlikely. Yet neither of us attributes our recovery to God.
Don't tell Kate Allatt that her difficult -- and unusually complete -- recovery from locked-in syndrome was a miracle. As she said, "It's called bloody hard work."

Covert Awareness Club: Coma Comradery in the Internet Age

Miracle GirlCovert Awareness Club: Coma Comradery in the Internet Age

This recovery blog has helped some coma survivors come to terms with their experiences. But I haven't been able to help a loved one of a patient until this week.
A wife contacted me via Coma Chameleon about her minimally conscious husband, asking my advice how to awaken him.
It was that very possibility that has lead me to keep this blog up in the first place.

AHCA: Grabbing for a Pre-Existing Condition Fig Leaf

Miracle GirlAHCA: Grabbing for a Pre-Existing Condition Fig Leaf
Did Jimmy Kimmel's newborn son cause his heart disease? And did I do something when I was 11 to cause my lung damage? The GOP seems to think so.
Butt-covering is a pre-existing condition for GOP congresspeople as they pass the AHCA. That's the only coverage 8 billion will ever provide.

Coma Girl

Coma Girl

Not a miracle recovery, but a miracle of modern medicine

In 2013 I fell into a six-week coma and nearly died after I contracted legionella. The Legionnaire's disease was in turn triggered by immunosuppression caused by the prednisone I was taking for my rare autoimmune disease, dermatomyositis.

I suffered a series of strokes on both sides of my brain when the sepsis caused my blood pressure to plummet. I fell into a deep coma. My kidneys and lungs began to fail, as my body was began dying one organ at a time. My doctors told my loved ones to give up hope for my full recovery. They expected me to die, and even if I somehow lived, I would remain a vegetable or at best left so hopelessly brain-damaged that I would never be same. But unbeknownst to them, while they were shining lights in my eyes and shaking their heads, I was telling them in my coma-dream--my secular version of a near-death experience--to leave me alone because I was trying to get back to sleep. I was experiencing what is known as covert cognition, the subject of my Skeptical Inquirer article "Covert Cognition: My So-Called Near-Death Experience," which appeared in their July/August issue.

But it wasn't a miracle--despite what so many continue to believe--that I recovered so fully. I owe my life not to God, but the miracles of modern medicine, as well as the nature of the watershed-area brain damage I suffered, as I detailed in my article and in this blog.
