Miracle GirlTrumpcare Fail Aftermath: 50 Ways to Lead to a Death Spiral

The CBO found that Obamacare ISN'T in a death spiral. But there are countless ways Donald Trump could set one in motion. Indeed, for the poor, a simple stroke of a pen could cause an all too real death spiral.

Ryancare: The Dog That Caught the Car…and Was Run Over by It

Miracle Girl: Ryancare: The Dog That Caught the Car…and Was Run Over by It

I’m not shedding any tears over Ryancare's impending demise. Nor are the 24 million Americans who will lose their healthcare if the AHCA is passed. In their reckless rush to pass Ryancare/Trumpcare, the GOP is sealing the AHCA's doom.

Medicaid Expansion: The AHCA Will Yank Coverage from Millions

Miracle GirlMedicaid Expansion: The AHCA Will Yank Coverage from Millions

Trumpcare/Ryancare is coming to take healthcare away. Millions -- including possibly me -- will be its victims. The people who gained healthcare through the ACA's Medicaid expansion aren't statistics...and without it their deaths will be all too real.

Miracle GirlCBO Estimate: Turning the Poor, Sick, and Aging Into GOP Pincushions

It won’t just be Medicaid recipients ripped to shreds by the American Health Care Act. As President Trump promised, people won't be dying on the streets. They'll be dying in their own homes for want of care.

AHCA: How the Battle to Save Obamacare May Soon Be Joined

Miracle GirlAHCA: How the Battle to Save Obamacare May Soon Be Joined

The poor and disabled alone may not have enough political strength to thwart the gutting of their healthcare, large and powerful organizations like the AARP do.
But now that the AARP has come out against the American Heath Care Act (AHCA), the Trumpcare/Ryancare battle has truly begun.

Access Denied: Medicaid Block Grants and Health Exclusions

Miracle GirlAccess Denied: Medicaid Block Grants and Health Exclusions

Trumpcare will provide the illusion of access, while barring millions from the healthcare "system." The GOP may be hungering for Medicaid block grants, but it'll be the recipients being led to the charnel house.

Coma Girl

Coma Girl

Not a miracle recovery, but a miracle of modern medicine

In 2013 I fell into a six-week coma and nearly died after I contracted legionella. The Legionnaire's disease was in turn triggered by immunosuppression caused by the prednisone I was taking for my rare autoimmune disease, dermatomyositis.

I suffered a series of strokes on both sides of my brain when the sepsis caused my blood pressure to plummet. I fell into a deep coma. My kidneys and lungs began to fail, as my body was began dying one organ at a time. My doctors told my loved ones to give up hope for my full recovery. They expected me to die, and even if I somehow lived, I would remain a vegetable or at best left so hopelessly brain-damaged that I would never be same. But unbeknownst to them, while they were shining lights in my eyes and shaking their heads, I was telling them in my coma-dream--my secular version of a near-death experience--to leave me alone because I was trying to get back to sleep. I was experiencing what is known as covert cognition, the subject of my Skeptical Inquirer article "Covert Cognition: My So-Called Near-Death Experience," which appeared in their July/August issue.

But it wasn't a miracle--despite what so many continue to believe--that I recovered so fully. I owe my life not to God, but the miracles of modern medicine, as well as the nature of the watershed-area brain damage I suffered, as I detailed in my article and in this blog.
