Year of Dead Celebrities: Will the New Year Be Bad for Your Health Too?

Miracle GirlYear of Dead Celebrities: Will the New Year Be Bad for Your Health Too?

2016 has been a bad year for celebrity deaths. But 2017 may be even worse for 'ordinary people.' The repeal of Obamacare will kill thousands more than the celebrities who died in 2016.

Seeking a New Year's Evolution

Miracle Girl: Seeking a New Year's Evolution

Will humanity ever evolve away the need to believe in an all-powerful god? Well, I believe religion isn't hard-wired in the human brain. That's a hopeful sign for the future.

Myth-Taken by Santa

Miracle Girl: Myth-Taken by Santa

"Santa is a fake! And all those Santas, in all those malls, they’re all fake too!" I was only 4, but a little skeptic in the making. Does the Santa myth remind you of something else?

All Aboard the Good Ship Nonreligious!

Miracle Girl: All Aboard the Good Ship Nonreligious!

Instead of nailing up a Keep Out sign, Patheos Nonreligious is putting out the boarding platform. Nones of all stripes will be needed if atheists hope to fight Republican attempts to breach the wall of separation between Church and State.

Trumpcare Should Be Called Trumpscare

Miracle Girl: Trumpcare Should Be Called Trumpscare

The Trump administration and the Republican congressional majority will throw the health of millions under their ideological bus. For millions of Americans, Trumpcare will mean no care.

I should know.

Non-Abrahamic Atheism: A Match Made in Heathen

Atheism exists everywhere there is theism. For every superstition, there are people who say, “Are you kidding me?” And for non-Abrahamic atheists, theirs is a match not made in Heaven.

The Patheos School of Christian Perversity

Miracle GirlThe Patheos School of Christian Perversity

My eyes have been opened to what it's like to grow up Christian from my fellow Patheos Atheist bloggers. I guess you can say that I've been attending the Patheos Atheist school for Christian Indoctrination Studies.

Coma Girl

Coma Girl

Not a miracle recovery, but a miracle of modern medicine

In 2013 I fell into a six-week coma and nearly died after I contracted legionella. The Legionnaire's disease was in turn triggered by immunosuppression caused by the prednisone I was taking for my rare autoimmune disease, dermatomyositis.

I suffered a series of strokes on both sides of my brain when the sepsis caused my blood pressure to plummet. I fell into a deep coma. My kidneys and lungs began to fail, as my body was began dying one organ at a time. My doctors told my loved ones to give up hope for my full recovery. They expected me to die, and even if I somehow lived, I would remain a vegetable or at best left so hopelessly brain-damaged that I would never be same. But unbeknownst to them, while they were shining lights in my eyes and shaking their heads, I was telling them in my coma-dream--my secular version of a near-death experience--to leave me alone because I was trying to get back to sleep. I was experiencing what is known as covert cognition, the subject of my Skeptical Inquirer article "Covert Cognition: My So-Called Near-Death Experience," which appeared in their July/August issue.

But it wasn't a miracle--despite what so many continue to believe--that I recovered so fully. I owe my life not to God, but the miracles of modern medicine, as well as the nature of the watershed-area brain damage I suffered, as I detailed in my article and in this blog.
